The Hague (News International/ Pakistan New News - APP. 22 November 2024) Israel, the United States and Argentina have condemned the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants for the Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister, while European Union member states, human rights organizations and the Palestinian Authority have praised the move. According to Reuters, the International Court also issued warrants for former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The action was taken on charges of war crimes during Israel’s military operations in Gaza since October 2023. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the court’s move as an anti-Semitic decision, saying that it was like a modern-day Dreyfus trial and that it would end the same way.
This was a reference to the 19th-century Jewish military captain Alfred Dreyfus, who was wrongly convicted of treason in France before being acquitted.
US President Joe Biden has called the ICC’s issuance of warrants for Israeli leaders a provocative move. He said that we will stand with Israel against threats to its integrity. Argentine President Javier Mellal said in a post on X that his country disagrees with a court ruling that ignores Israel’s right to defend itself in response to attacks.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that this is a court decision, not an international one, and that it must be respected and implemented. The Palestinian Authority said that the ICC ruling is an expression of hope and confidence in international legal institutions. The Palestinian Authority urged the court members to implement a policy of cutting off contact and meetings with Netanyahu and Yves Gallant.
Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now an official wanted man after the ICC issued an arrest warrant. ICC members, countries and the international community should stop everything and do nothing until these individuals are brought before the court’s independent and impartial judges.
Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tanç described the ICC ruling as a case of “late, but right”. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan praised the issuance of the arrest warrants for the Israeli leaders, calling it a “very important step”. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crassetto said his country would be obliged to arrest them during the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yuval Gavrilov.
Officials in Spain say their country respects the ruling and will abide by it. Spanish officials said they would uphold their commitments and obligations under the Rome Statute and international law. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth said it was important that the International Criminal Court exercise its jurisdiction fairly.
I am confident that the court will conduct the trial to the highest standards. Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmö Stengard said Sweden and the European Union support the court's important step and defend its defense and independence. Similarly, the Belgian Foreign Ministry said that "wherever the crime is, Belgium is against any kind of immunity from punishment." The Belgian ministry said in a post on X that it fully supports the ICC's move. Those who committed crimes in Israel and Gaza must be prosecuted, regardless of who committed them.\932
