Hundreds of anti-Assad opposition fighters seize central Aleppo city in Syria

Israel and the US are behind the massive clashes in Aleppo and Idlib, the attacks by the opposition in Syria. Iran

Saturday 30 November 2024

Damascus (News International News - 30th November, 2024) The Syrian Observatory has said that hundreds of armed members of the anti-Assad opposition in Syria have reached the central areas of Aleppo city, including Hamdaniya, New Aleppo, Salahuddin and Saif al-Dawla. Officials say that Aleppo Airport has been closed and all flights have been canceled. There are Russian military bases in Aleppo and Idlib. Russian forces are present in various cities to help the Syrian government at its request.

According to the Arab Broadcasting Agency, the casualties in the clashes that have been going on for the past three days include members of armed groups and the Syrian army, whose number has reached hundreds. After the Nusra Front announced a complete curfew in the city, the armed groups published photos of the moment they entered the Al-Shaar area of Aleppo. They documented the moment they entered the headquarters of the governor of Aleppo and the military hospital. In addition, the armed groups have also seized the police headquarters building and the governor's headquarters in Aleppo city.

Armed groups allied with the Tahrir al-Sham organization, formerly known as the Nusra Front, published photos that they said were of central Aleppo. Fighting is still ongoing between the Syrian army and the armed groups in and around the center of Aleppo city. The armed groups said they entered neighborhoods in Aleppo, while the Syrian army confirmed that it responded to the attack and inflicted heavy losses on the militants.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that armed groups in Syria managed to enter the Hamdaniya, Aleppo Al-Jadeeda and Adamiya areas of Aleppo city and attacked the central areas of the city after carrying out two suicide car bombings. According to information, the number of people killed in the two-day clashes has reached 255, including more than 140 from the armed groups and about 90 from the Syrian army. According to the deputy head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation between the Warring Parties in Syria, the Russian Air Force has killed at least 200 militants from unorganized armed groups in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates over the past 24 hours.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the process of pushing back the armed groups is still ongoing. On the other hand, the Syrian army said in a statement that it is resisting a major attack on the governorates of Aleppo and Idlib. The Syrian army said that the armed groups used heavy and medium weapons and drones in the attack on Aleppo and Idlib. They stressed that their army countered the attacks on Aleppo and Idlib, inflicting heavy damage on these armed groups and destroying dozens of vehicles and drones.

On the other hand, Iran has accused Israel and the United States of being behind the opposition attacks in Syria. According to Iranian state television, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has condemned the attacks by the Syrian opposition and called them a US-Israeli plan after Israel's defeat in Lebanon and Palestine. He said that Araqchi confirmed Tehran's support for the Syrian government in a phone call with his Syrian counterpart.

Iran's Foreign Ministry announced in a statement that Iran has renewed its strong support for its ally Syria in light of the massive attack on the outskirts of Aleppo in the country's north. The statement said that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, in a phone call with his Syrian counterpart, stressed Iran's continued support for the Syrian government, its people and its army in the fight against terrorism.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the situation in Aleppo a violation of Syria's sovereignty. He also expressed his country's support for the Syrian government in restoring peace and order in the region and restoring the constitutional order. Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the Russian National Defense magazine, said that in light of the current threats, the necessary security measures have been taken at the Russian Hmeimim and Tartus bases in Syria. Korotchenko said that we will start with the fact that the first thing is to guarantee the vicinity of the base, whether in Hmeimim or in Tartus. As for opposition activity, unfortunately, this threat is imminent.

He said that it is clear that this is an American attempt to create an additional point of tension in order to put pressure on Russia and its interests in the region. The efforts of the outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden to escalate the conflict in Ukraine are also being seen. At the same time, points of tension are being created for Russian interests in other parts of the world. The intensification of the activities of the Syrian armed opposition is also related to the ability of US intelligence to coordinate and activate it in a timely manner.
