Islamabad (News International / Pakistan New News - DW Urdu - 23 November 2024) According to the results of a recent nationwide survey completed by the Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research of the German Federal Office of Employment, women and men have significantly different financial flexibility in their attitudes towards potential job wages in the event of unemployment.
Unemployment increases in Germany this summer
For example, unemployed mothers are willing to take on lower-paid jobs to re-establish themselves in the labor market, while unemployed fathers are often not.
In the survey, more than 50 percent of unemployed mothers said that if they found a job, they would be willing to work even for a lower salary.
In contrast, only 40 percent of unemployed men with children were willing to work for lower salaries.
Distance to work and difficult working hours
According to the results of the survey, which was conducted in Nuremberg by the German Federal Employment Agency Institute IAB, there were clear differences in preferences between unemployed men and women with children regarding the distance from home to work and the difficulty or inconvenience of working hours.
German workers worked 1.3 billion hours of overtime last year, mostly unpaid
Unemployed fathers were mostly convinced that if they found a suitable job, they would be willing to work far from home and during difficult and inconvenient working hours.
In contrast, the majority of unemployed mothers preferred a workplace that was not too far from home and working hours that did not interfere with their private home life, even if this meant working for a lower salary.
Traditional understanding of the social roles of men and women
The nationwide survey also showed that the traditional understanding of the roles of men and women as workers in German society is, at least in part, a reality.
Working from home will remain popular in Germany, new analysis
According to this social perception, women, especially when they are mothers, are generally willing to take on low-paid jobs because of their role in the family.
In contrast, for men with children, adequate financial compensation for their work as breadwinners is more important in their family role.
That is why, according to Corina Fordermann, a researcher at the IAB Institute, around 60 percent of unemployed fathers who participated in the survey said that if the job was paid well, they would accept such a new job, despite the distance to work and the difficult working hours.

In contrast, the rate of women willing to accept any job in such circumstances was only 19 percent.
The data on which this survey was based is collected annually by the German Employment Agency under the title "Labor Market and Social Protection".
