Pakistan is also being affected by the growing food insecurity, climate change, population growth and slow economic growth in the world, Shahid Imran

 Sunday 8 December 2024

ISLAMABAD (News International / Pakistan News - 08th December, 2024) Shahid Imran, Convener of the Regional Committee on Food of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, has said that Pakistan is also being affected by the growing food insecurity, climate change, population growth and slow economic growth in the world. Talking to a delegation of industrialists from Vehari led by former Vice President FPCCI Chaudhry Zahid Iqbal Arain here on Sunday, he said that urgent and multifaceted measures are needed on both the domestic and global fronts to deal with this threat in a timely manner.

He said that we should focus on sustainable agricultural practices, investing in climate-resilient crops, modern irrigation systems and education and training of farmers can increase productivity and reduce extreme weather risks.

He said that policymakers should focus on crop diversification to reduce dependence on wheat and rice varieties that require more water.

In 1999, hybrid rice varieties developed by Guard Agriculture Research and Services Limited were successfully demonstrated to have superior yields. Shahid Imran said that it is also important to strengthen regional and global partnerships. We can leverage regional alliances like SAARC to develop a collaborative food security framework and establish early warning systems for resource sharing and climate change. Technical expertise and financial support can also be obtained by linking up with FAO and the World Food Programme. Better management of storage, transportation and distribution can reduce food waste and ensure that more food reaches consumers. Shahid Imran said that social safety nets and subsidized food security programmes can help protect vulnerable populations. A coordinated strategy to address food insecurity can be formulated by promoting public-private partnerships. He said that with good decision-making and collaboration with the international community, Pakistan can mitigate its food security challenges and contribute to broader regional stability.
