Islamabad (UrduPoint News International / Pakistan Point News - 25th December, 2024 ) Bangladesh Awami League Party chief and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wajid, who was also her advisor during her mother’s tenure, has said that the allegations of corruption and bribery leveled against his mother and her entire family by the Anti-Corruption Commission in Dhaka are false and baseless.
Contract awarded to Russian company Rosatom
According to reports received on Wednesday, December 25, Sajib Wajid said in an emailed statement to the news agency Reuters that there is no truth in the allegations leveled against him and his mother in connection with the award of the contract for Bangladesh’s Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to Rosatom.

This contract worth $ 12.65 billion was awarded to the Russian state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom in Rooppur in 2015 during Sheikh Hasina’s government.
Rosatom is the world’s largest supplier of enriched uranium for nuclear power plants.
Pakistan and Bangladesh committed to promoting bilateral relations
Regarding the award of this deal to Rosatom, Bangladesh’s State Anti-Corruption Commission had just said on Monday, December 23 that it had started a formal investigation into allegations of corruption, financial embezzlement and money laundering in connection with the deal.
In response, Sheikh Hasina’s US-based son Sajib Wajid, who is a refugee in India, has said that he, his mother or any other member of their family was not involved in any corruption in connection with the deal.
Moreover, the allegations are “completely false” and “part of a character assassination campaign.”

The deal, awarded to Russian company Rosatom nine years ago, will see the construction of two nuclear power plants in Rooppur, each capable of generating up to 1,200 megawatts of electricity.

According to the Anti-Corruption Commission in Dhaka, the deal allegedly involved financial irregularities worth $5 billion and involved then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajib Wajid and a relative of Sheikh Hasina, Tulip Siddique.

According to the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission, the alleged corruption and financial embezzlement in the Rooppur nuclear power plant deal were carried out using offshore bank accounts.
