Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - 11th Dec, 2024 ) Notre Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a fire in 2019, reopened yesterday. The 850-year-old church is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Several world leaders, including newly elected US President Donald Trump, attended the two-hour opening ceremony and service on Saturday night, and the Archbishop of Paris reopened the cathedral by knocking on the door three times.
The opening ceremony was led by Archbishop Laurent Ulrich of Paris, where 150 bishops and more than 100 priests from the capital were present, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron.
Donald Trump was seated in the front row as the guest of honor with French President Emmanuel Macron.
He and other guests were amazed by the cathedral’s new and clean walls, as well as new furniture and state-of-the-art lighting.
In a short speech, President Macron thanked the “French people” for their support in the restoration work. He also praised the experts and workers for completing the restoration work so quickly.
“France has proven once again what great nations can do. The impossible can be made possible,” he said.

The reconstruction efforts of this church have cost about 700 million euros and have also been supported by a large number of donations. Earlier, it was said that the restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral after the fire could take decades, but the repair and restoration work was completed in just five years.
This 850-year-old cathedral has been a silent spectator of French history from the coronation of Napoleon in 1804 to the ‘liberation of Paris’ in 1944.
Construction of Notre Dame began in 1163 during the reign of King Louis VII. It took about two hundred years to build.
The centuries-old cathedral was also ‘desecrated’ during the French Revolution from 1789 to 1799.
The cathedral remained in ruins until Victor Hugo’s historical novel ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, published in 1831.
The novel’s protagonist, Quasimodo,’s undying love for the cathedral inspired the rebuilding and restoration of the church. Its reconstruction began in 1844, which continued until 1864.
Then in 2019, a high tower of the church collapsed due to a fire. Notre Dame is also considered a beacon of hope.
