Syrian rebels enter Damascus, President Assad flees the country

Islamabad (News International/ Pakistan News - 11th Dec, 2024 ) Before entering the capital Damascus, the fighters of the rebel group called Hayat Tahrir al-Sham had also captured the Syrian city of Homs. Syrian media has also reported that President Bashar al-Assad is no longer in Damascus but has gone abroad.

In addition to the rebels’ entry into the country’s capital and President Assad’s departure abroad, reports from various news agencies from Damascus also state that the Syrian Prime Minister has offered that he is ready for a peaceful transfer of power in the country, while government forces stationed at Damascus airport have also reportedly left there.


End of the Assad regime, release of all prisoners

The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebels, who had been continuously advancing and occupying various cities in the past few days, first took control of Hama, then Homs, and now they have also occupied Damascus.


In a statement broadcast on Syrian state television after entering the capital, the rebels said on Sunday that they had overthrown the 24-year-old regime of Bashar al-Assad and had freed all prisoners held in the country's prisons.

In the video statement, the rebels said, "With the fall of dictator Assad and the liberation of Damascus, Syria is still a free state, and all citizens and opposition fighters must work together to protect all state institutions."


The Syrian army also confirmed the fall of the Assad regime.


Reuters and DPA news agencies, citing Syrian military sources, said that the country's high command had also informed all its officers that President Bashar al-Assad's term in power in the country had ended.


The DPA also reported that government forces have also been told that they are “no longer in service.”


According to eyewitnesses, when the rebels entered Damascus on Sunday morning, there was no sign of the Syrian army. Most of the military checkpoints were empty, while used military uniforms were scattered on the ground and posters of Bashar al-Assad were scattered.
