US fighter jet hit by 'friendly fire'

Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - DW Urdu - 22 December 2024) The US Central Command 'CENTCOM' announced on Saturday evening according to Florida local time that the incident occurred on Saturday morning.


A statement issued by CENTCOM said that the F/A-18 fighter jet was the target of friendly fire.

The fighter jet was taking off from the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman when another missile carrier in the US Navy fleet, the USS Gettysburg, fired a missile at the aircraft.


CENTCOM said that both pilots were able to safely eject from the plane and that one pilot suffered minor injuries.


According to the statement, a full investigation into the incident is underway.


US forces are deployed in the region due to threats from the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen. On Saturday, the army once again bombed Houthi positions near the Yemeni capital Sanaa.


In addition, several Houthi drones and cruise missiles were also shot down in the Red Sea.
