Islamabad (UrduPoint News International/ Pakistan Point News - 1st January, 2025 ) According to reports received from the British capital London on Wednesday, the first day of the year 2025, these figures were released by the London government today.

The sea route to Britain

The English Channel is a narrow sea area, on one side of which is the United Kingdom and on the other side are European Union member countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

A large number of migrants trying to cross this sea area in small, unsafe boats and thus reach Britain begin their dangerous journey, mostly from the French coastal areas.

The number of migrants trying to reach Britain by sea has increased significantly in the past few years, and the government has taken several steps to discourage this trend.

Despite this, the trend of migrants seeking asylum crossing the English Channel continues to increase.

Annual numbers up by a quarter

According to provisional figures for 2024 released by the Home Office in London, the number of refugees and migrants who crossed the English Channel to the UK by boat last year was 36,816, compared to 29,437 the year before.

This means that 25% more migrants crossed the English Channel illegally to the UK in 2024 than in 2023.

The annual numbers for last year and the year before were lower than in 2022 because a new record was set for the arrival of migrants in small boats to the UK.

In 2022, the number was 45,774.

The challenge facing Prime Minister Starmer

Last year, there was a 25% increase in the number of migrants arriving in the UK by sea, which is a major challenge for the government of the current Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who belongs to the Labour Party.

After coming to power in July last year, Starmer pledged to drastically reduce the number of migrants arriving via the English Channel.

It is also important for Keir Starmer's government to control this problem because, shortly after becoming Prime Minister, he cancelled the controversial plan of his predecessor Tory government, under which it was decided to send migrants who arrived in Britain irregularly to the African country of Rwanda.

The current British government has also signed agreements with several other countries aimed at identifying and eliminating criminal groups involved in human trafficking, who send thousands of people across the English Channel each year in small boats for huge sums of money.
