Washington (UrduPoint News - 08 January 2025) US President-elect Donald Trump, while explaining his position on important foreign policy issues, demanded the release of the hostages from Hamas. During a press conference in Florida, Trump emphasized six times that if the hostages are not released, there will be apocalypse in the Middle East.
According to the American broadcaster, Donald Trump discussed his foreign policy during the press conference. Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, said that his team is close to reaching an agreement and that he will return to the Middle East in the coming days. Addressing his envoy, Trump said, "I don't want to harm your negotiations, but if the hostages are not returned by the time I take office, there will be apocalypse in the Middle East and that will not be good for Hamas and the truth is that it will not be good for anyone."
Speaking about the Ukraine war, he expressed interest in meeting with the Russian president. Trump reiterated his commitment to resolving the Ukraine conflict, but did not elaborate on how he would resolve the issue. When asked about Kiev's demand to join NATO, which is included in the Ukraine peace plan, Trump said that he thought it was always understood that Ukraine would not be included in the security alliance. On this occasion, Trump repeated his threats to raise tariffs on US neighbors Canada and Mexico. He also said that Canada should be a state of the United States. He also announced that we are going to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Regarding the large North American island of Greenland, he said that we need it for economic security. However, Trump did not say how the United States would gain control of Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. When asked bluntly whether he would not use military or economic pressure to gain control of Greenland and the strategic Panama Canal, he replied that he could not assure you about either of those two. He accused Panama of violating a four-decade-old agreement to acquire the canal under President Jimmy Carter. Trump said he admired Carter as a person. The president-elect is expected to attend Carter's nationally-celebrated funeral in Washington tomorrow, where President Joe Biden will pay tribute. Trump said he would announce a major pardon on his first day in office, in response to a question about the more than 1,500 people charged with crimes in connection with the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
Trump also reiterated his commitment to getting the US out of the “swamp” of environmental regulations and paving the way for billionaire investors. Regarding his performance in the presidential election last November, Trump called his re-election of the Electoral College and the popular vote a landslide victory. He pledged that future election results would be counted on election night. He announced his intention to drill for oil in the ocean and said he would reverse Biden’s recent protection orders in this regard. Trump accused Biden of a foreign policy failure. He said he was entering a world that is burning. Trump will take office for a second time after a four-year hiatus on January 20.
